Every year in Berlin the Fulbright Commission holds a week long event, and
Fulbright Scholars from all over Europe come to meet one another, attend
lectures and generally enjoy themselves. One evening during this week, the
musicians in the group typically will put on a concert for the other
Fulbrighters. I wrote the Four Tableaus for the music evening during the
1985 conference.
There is no doubt that I wanted this work primarily to be an entertainment,
and the third movement, Dance, makes this clear (the original title of
the movement was Walzer der Fulbright-Kommission). But there is also some
quiet introspection in this piece, especially the second movment, Fantasy,
in which the guitar seems to improvise freely while the flute ocassionally
provides a note or two of accompaniment.
The work has been independently recorded by the Baxter/Ghezzi Duo.
