Program Notes

This work was written with the style of trumpet playing in popular music of the 1940's and 50's in mind. This is not to say that the soloist should make extensive use of, e.g., wide, fast vibrato, but as an occasional embellishment it would be most effective. This work takes that music as a point of departure, and while it is evoked in certain places more explicitly than others, the style referred to should remain that: a point of departure, a subject of discussion.
