Wednesday, March 9, 2005 Tucson, Arizona For The Record I never said any such thing.
A Tucson local, visibly dismayed A couple of days ago The Arizona Daily Star ran a feature article by Cathalena E. Burch about this Friday's concert and my new duo. It was a lovely article, very supportive of the festival, with several nice quotes from the musicians, Joe Lin and Svet Stoyanov, about the piece. However, toward the end we find this: The [Bulgarian tapan] looks like a small, primitive bass drum, but it produces a wide range of sounds that brought Cotton's movement to life. "The image of Svetoslav playing the tapan stayed with me while writing this movement and inspired the title," Cotton, 47, wrote. "I think audiences will love this. It is a wonderful piece for violin and percussion," he said. Good Lord. Now, please rest assured that I have a healthy ego and am happy with the way this piece turned out. But anyone who knows me will tell you that I have never in my life talked about my own music this way, and in any case I am certainly savvy enough to know what one does and does not say in a press interview. So for the record, I never said any such thing. My assumption is that the “he” referred to here was either Joe or Svet, and the sentence ended up orphaned through the usual slash-and-burn handiwork of an “editor”. 18 March 2005: Cathalena responds in an E-mail: “The published version (print) was correct and attributed that quote to Svet. I have no idea how the link was broken online. I apologize. I'll have the online editor fix it so that it's not like that for eternity.” Just as I suspected. Thank you, Cathalena. |
